Why is reef friendly sunscreen better for the environment?
There are harmful chemicals in most sunscreen that are causing coral reef damage, in particular 'coral bleaching'. Chemical based sunscreen comes off your skin while swimming or showering, and scientists are seeing the negative effects from it happening more quickly than the effects of climate change.
If the sunscreen you own contains any of the chemicals listed below - it is NOT reef safe.
- Any form of micro plastic spheres or beads.
- Any nanoparticles like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
- 4-methylbenzylidene camphor
- Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA)
- Methyl Paraben
- Ethyl Paraben
- Propyl Paraben
- Butyl Paraben
- Benzyl Paraben
