How to use your reusable stretch lids
Now you have taken your next step towards a waste free household and reducing your use of disposable cling wrap. Once you have opened up your 6 new silicone stretch lids out of the recycled cardboard packaging, give them a quick wash to rinse off any dust that might have attracted to the silicone. Next, we recommend coating your new bags with some light cooking oil to prevent future stains and smells from any colourful foods. Then dry all water and oil residue off.
To place the reusable lid over a bowl, plate or any large object, firstly make sure the outside is completely dry. Place one side of the lid over one side of the object until firmly in place. Next, stretch the other end of the reusable lid over the opposite end, while still placing pressure on the first side to stop the lid from slipping off. Once both sides of the reusable stretch lid are over the object, use the little pull tags around the lid to ensure the lid is evenly spread out and won’t come off. The reusable stretch lid should be tight and secure around the object, if you are struggling for the lid to stretch over the object’s edge or the lid is too baggy, you may need to change lid sizes for that object.
Our reusable stretch lids can either be hand washed in some hot soapy water or washed in the dishwasher (away from knives). The best way to dry your reusable stretch lids, is to place them over a glass in the drying rack, or peg them on your washing line.
Removing stains and mould
Colourful foods can sometimes leave colourful stains on the silicone stretch lids, because silicone’s chemical structure likes to stick to things! Foods like beetroot, turmeric and red curries are some of the culprits that like to stain everything. Mould also likes to make an appearance when your left overs get forgotten about at the back of the fridge... We are all guilty of this from time to time! But no fear, the reusable stretch lids can easily be cleaned and sanitised.
We recommend using a little chemical free DIY recipe to remove any stubborn stains or mould:
- 1 tea spoon of bicarb soda
- 1 tea spoon of white vinegar
- Boiling water
- Fresh lemon juice (to remove the vinegar/bicarb smell and cut through grease)
Soak the bag with equal parts bicarb soda and vinegar, and add boiling water with some freshly squeezed lemon juice for approximately 1 hour. Then thoroughly wash the lids out with soapy hot water and a sponge. Dry as per usual.
Why are our reusable stretch lids better for the environment?
From the assessment titled "Plastic Protective Packaging Market Forecast, Trend Analysis & Competition Tracking- Global Market Insights 2018-2028" there are predictions that the plastic protective packaging market might surpass 9 million tonnes in 2019, with a higher demand for more environmentally friendly packaging. Plastic cling wrap in particular is projected to lock in at 3 million tonnes worth of sales of the LDEP resin-based stretch wrap in 2019.
That is a hell of a lot of cling wrap! 3 million tonne of plastic that will last a lifetime, but will just be used once. But not only is switching to reusable lid covers more environmentally friendly, it feels better in your wallet too.
Let’s do the math!
1 roll of standard brand cling wrap at the grocery store costs an average of $4.50
Let’s say you go through 1 roll every 3 months. That is $18 per year.
For 10 years that is $180
1 set of reusable stretch lids cost you $20, but you are probably going to need 2 because unless you live by yourself, you are going to use them a lot!
They will easily last 10 years with proper care, so that’s $40
$180 – 40 = $140 saved from switching to reusable stretch lids
